Free public Wi-Fi is a great way to get connected while you are on-the-go and reduce usage of your data plan on your phone. It is also a great way to be a victim of cybercrime. Here are some public Wi-Fi security tips to help keep you safe.

  • Ask the provider for the name of the Wi-Fi. It is easy to set up a Wi-Fi and trick people into to connecting to the wrong network.
  • Select “public network” when prompted for network type when you first connect. Doing so will enhance the security of your computer by disabling features used on trusted networks.
  • Make sure your firewall is on and your anti-virus is running and updated.
  • Always use a VPN. If you are doing anything sensitive, like logging into your bank, you need the added protection of a VPN. If you don’t know when it’s safe to not use a VPN, always use a VPN.
  • Make sure your operating system and apps are up to date on patches.
  • Always use multi-factor or two-factor authentication (2FA). This gives you a one-time password to use to access a system. In the event an attacker gets your credentials, you still have the 2FA protection.
  • Forget the network after you quit using it. Your device remembers networks so it can connect automatically when it sees it again. That’s great for home and office, but it’s best it forgets the rest.
